Three Day Weekend, One day of Rest.

Day 1: We began our crazy weekend with a travel group with the theme of Ghost Hunting early in the day.  They toured the house with our RISEUP partners, had lunch and continued on their way to Lizzie Borden’s House in Fall River.  In the evening we welcomed visitors to or 2nd annual Beer Garden, co sponsored by Craig Penardo of Shoppers Liquors and Dave Thomas of Bella’s Sports Bar. The Coventry Police were on hand to make sure all went well and everyone was safe.  DJ Kenny Payne and musician Matt Kern provided the entertainment.  A good time was had by all!  All of our brewers offered good brews and we look forward to doing it again next year.

Day 2: Heritage Day.  A fun filled day with music by the Providence Brigade Band, the Aquidneck Intertribal Indian Council and the drum circle with singing by the Soaring Eagle Singers.  A new attraction this year was the Old Fiddlers of Rhode Island.  Food was good, crafters offered a variety of home crafted goods and most of all we had terrific weather.  The Rhode Island Spinners Guild joined as well as the Elisha Dyer Camp 7 of the Sons of the Union Veterans as they do every year.

In the evening RISEUP had a paranormal event with ten people.  A lot of activity that night.  The spirits were in a festive mood with all that was going on among the living.

Day 3:  Local Hero General Nathanael Greene stopped for a visit to help us kick off the start of the 275th Anniversary of the founding of the Town of Coventry.  He updated us as to what was going on in Boston as he had just returned from there.  He was just promoted to the rank of General where just a short time before he was a private.  (Remember he was portraying the time of 1775.)

Monday was a day of rest.  Now we are back up and running.  Next big event is the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  Stay tuned!

This is just the beginning of many new things planned for The Paine House Museum the Western RI Civic Historical Society and the Town of Coventry 275th Anniversary

Good Weather Weekend!

beer tasting image

Weather’s looking good for the weekend.  Beer Garden will be cool once the sun goes down.  Perfect weather for a good time!  Sampling brews, listening to music, good times with friends!  Who could ask for more.  You still can get tickets online at  http://www.eventbrite.com/e/2nd-annual-beer-garden-tickets-12605995873   And the next day…..

Heritage day image

Heritage Day!  Weather calls for 80 degrees.  A last bit of summer as we go into fall.  Good time again for families and friends.  Enjoy the music of the Providence Brigade Band, the Aquidneck Island Intertribal Council with the music of their drum and the voices of the Soaring Eagle Singers.  Afternoon brings a new group to the Heritage Day family, the Old Fiddlers of Rhode Island.  Not just the entertainment of music.  Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Elisha Dyer Camp 7 will answer any questions you may have about the Civil War, Swamp Meadow Community Theater will portray some of the characters of Paine House as in addition to our house tours.  Local crafters will be on hand for those shopping for different and interesting items and once again the food court will be operated by the students of Regional Career and Technical Center at Coventry High School.  New this year are apple dumplings.  These students are studying the culinary arts at the school.  Learn about colonial games the children played.  Very different from what kids play today.  So much going on for one day.

Also new this year, we are collecting for “Operation Stand Down” a local community group that is collecting for homeless veterans.  Paine House is a drop off site for anyone that would like to help by donating items for the benefit of these veterans.

General Greene is coming to The Brayton Tavern (Paine House Museum) Sept. 28, 2014

Nathanael and Caty

Photo Courtesy of Laura Paton, Paton Photography

The year is 1775/76.  Join us for a Living History event with native son and hero General Nathanael Greene and his wife Caty as they visit their neighbors, the Braytons.  He is preparing for the fight for liberty and our American way of life.  It is still a happy time, worry about the future is apparent, but they have not lived through these hardships at this time.  The General and Mrs. Greene will arrive a 10 am for anyone to stop by and visit.  There will be a colonial dinner at 1 offering a meal that would be similar to what would have been available at colonial times.  Roast beer, baked ham, salad, roasted potatoes, corn on the cob, baked beans and desserts that would have been available at harvest time.  The cost for the dinner is $25 for adults, children 6-12 $12.50 and children under 6 are free.  Call 401-249-0633 for information or tickets for the dinner.

Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the General.  Even his horse will be here to meet his public.

This is the kick off event for the Town of Coventry 275th Anniversary which will be in 2016.  The remainder of 2014 and 2015 will present many events to raise money for the program for 2016.  Some will have historical theme and other events for entertainment alone
